The Importance of Walking Your Small Dog

You can see it in their eyes.  You can hear it in their bark. Small dogs have a confidence about them unlike anything else. Sure, they may only weigh a couple pounds, but in their mind they are just as big and tough as a Chocolate Lab or Golden Retriever.

While our small dogs enjoy trotting up and down the street, teasing much bigger dogs with their swift moves, we can forget how important their walk is. There’s a common misconception that small dogs don’t need as much exercise, but, contrary to belief, “toy dogs” or small dogs may develop problems due to lack of activity. These smaller pooches are likely to be held, carried and sit more than any other, so all the more reason to get these little pups on the move.

Dr. Eric Barchas, a veterinarian with a focus on small animal internal medicine expressed how important walking is for small dogs.

“Small dogs are highly prone to obesity, which can exacerbate several common small dog health problems such as collapsing trachea, heart disease and luxating patella,” Dr. Barchas says. “Exercise will also promote emotional well-being and helps prevent behavior problems (such as separation anxiety) that are linked to boredom.”

Just because small dogs don’t weigh much and they have a small, slim physique, that doesn’t mean they don’t need to walk. Dr. Barchas recommends walking with your dog everyday.

“I recommend a bare minimum of 30 minutes of walking at a comfortable pace (for the dog) each day. However, every individual has unique needs and tolerances, therefore unique exercise requirements,” says Dr. Barchas. “The best thing is to allow your dog (whether big or small) as much exercise as he or she desires every day. And of course, I always recommend regular veterinary checkups to assess over health. These check-ups can focus on issues such as cardiac assessment and prevention of dental disease that are especially important in toy breeds.”

So the next time you see your pooch eying the door for a long walk, grab the leash and get a move on it. They will enjoy every step, and you will be a part of keeping them healthy and active.

  1. wonderful

One of my worries about getting a doggie now that I live in the city was that they must be walked. Previously, I had open backyard space and fenced in areas to let my dogs out. I now live in an urban setting next to a large park. I find absolute joy walking Princess Trudy Ann twice daily (especially the evening walk); it gives me time to daydream. So, now instead of worry, I so look forward to the kiss of my spouse, and the joy of watching my little Princess prance around the park.
