Vacationing with Fido

The sun, the sand, the wind in your hair —what’s not to love about  vacation? Well, for some pet lovers out there, it’s not being about to take their furry friends along with them. But who ever said you can’t take your pup with you? After all, “man’s best friend” deserves a little stint of rest and relaxation just as much as you do.

If you plan to travel with your dog this year, or if you need a little bit of encouragement to take the leap – take a look at our top five tips for vacationing with fido.

1. Check Regulations

If you are flying with your pooch, be sure to check the airlines’ website for fees and regulations.  Depending on your dog’s size and weight, the way they travel will differ. Small dogs are typically able to be placed in a carrier, under your seat and larger dogs are likely to fly with the cargo. Here’s a great article to keep you prepared for flying.

2. Set Up Lodging

If you are looking for a hotel that is pet-friendly, check out PetsWelcome.com. You can  search by city and state to find a perfect hotel for you, your family and your furry friend.

3. Be Prepared

Whether you are traveling by train, plane or car, be sure to pack everything your dog might need on this journey. One of the most commonly forgotten items is a dog bowl. Keep in mind, whatever your dog uses at home, he or she will also need on your vacation. As always, it’s best to schedule a visit with your local veterinarian before traveling to ensure you have a healthy pet that is cleared for travel.

4. Make Small Trips First

Some dogs just do not travel well. Whether it’s the car ride that makes them anxious or a crowded  airport, be sure your pet is prepared for a long trip. Give your four-legged friend a chance to take some baby-steps by planning a few short roadtrips in advance of an extended vacation.

5. Include Your Dog as Much as Possible

Your dog will be in a new environment no matter where your vacation takes you, so be sure to include your pooch and keep a consistent schedule as much as possible. Whether this means daily walks on the beach or scheduled play time, it’s important to make a plan that involves your pet before embarking on your trip.
